Harrison Township — Selfridge Air National Guard Base plans to mark its 100th anniversary in August 2017 with an air show featuring the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

The appearance is planned as part of the 2017 Selfridge Open House, which will celebrate the heritage of the base in Macomb County’s Harrison Township. The 127th Wing says the air show will include a variety of current and historical aircraft.

“The 2017 Open House will not only celebrate the full century of service the men and women of Selfridge have contributed to America, but will also launch us into our second century,” said Brig. Gen. John D. Slocum, commander of the 127th Wing, the host military unit at Selfridge.

Past Selfridge Open Houses have drawn in excess of 200,000 visitors and a similar large turn-out is expected in 2017, according to base officials.

The base was established July 1, 1917, amid World War I.

Other events to mark the centennial will be announced later this year. They’re expected to include ceremonies, a museum display and the publishing of a book.
